What Are The Satir Modes?

The Satir Modes refer to the communication styles categorized by Virginia Satir, a renowned family therapist. These modes are used to explain how individuals express themselves and interact with others. Understanding the Satir Modes can greatly enhance our communication skills and foster healthier relationships.

There are four main modes:

  • Placating
  • Blaming
  • Computing
  • Distracting

Placating involves excessive agreeability and prioritizing others’ needs over one’s own. Blaming, on the other hand, involves putting the responsibility for problems on others. Computing refers to a logical and detached communication style, while Distracting involves diverting attention from the real issues. By recognizing and adapting our communication styles, we can become more effective communicators and create more meaningful connections with others.
